Commissions

I’ve heard from many people that it can be uncomfortable or intimidating to inquire about commissioning a painting.
I hope I can help dissipate some of that by, at least, letting you know how this process works with me.

Commissions demystified

First, I think as an, ahem, ‘artisté’, I’m supposed to be somewhat aloof and perhaps even a bit enigmatic. I’m supposed to be above the fray in terms of talking about the nuts-n-bolts of making art. The more distant and mysterious the artist is, the more they and their work seem valuable — and hey, that sounds like fun for me, but not so much for everyone else. So hopefully, I can demystify some of this process. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me via the contact form on this website. I’m happy to field your questions about the possibility of a commissioning a painting (or even a sculpture), or perhaps buying an already completed piece.

Price

The price of painting is determined by:

  • Complexity
  • Size
  • Framing options
  • Shipping

My process

  1. Decide which pieces you like. Generally, the best place to start is for you to review my work on the Gallery or Shop pages and indicate to me which pieces are most appealing to you. (You can mention titles, describe the piece, or send me a link to it).
  2. Describe the elements that appeal to you. If you can give me an idea of elements that you like — including but not limited to color palettes, figures, complexity and even orientation (vertical vs horizontal) that will give me an idea of how to approach your piece. Of course, you are also invited to tell me which pieces of mine you aren’t so fond of — that can be helpful too. I’m not easily offended so don’t worry about that. My goal here is to end up with both a painting that you love and one where I feel connected to it while creating it. I feel I do my best work when it still feels like I’m just doing the painting for myself. So, in short, I want your input … but just not TOO much input.
  3. Determine size and budget. I’ll need to get a sense of the size painting you would like and your budget. You can establish a ball bark budget based on similar sold work in my portfolio. If you’re unable to locate a price on a portfolio piece, feel free to ask me.
  4. Request a sketch and pay deposit. Once you’ve communicated the elements, size, and budget of the piece you envision, I’ll create a sketch for your piece. Once the sketch and budget is approved, I will ask you for a 50% deposit. The remainder is due just prior to shipping.
  5. Shipping. Shipping options are as follows, in descending order of speed: Airplane > Fast Car > Regular Van > Shitty Van > Guy on Horse > Donkey > Man Carrying Package > Child Kicking Package Ahead of Him As He Walks

That’s it! Feel free to get in touch with any questions, or to start your commission process. Contact form.
